DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE

The Department of Commerce was established in the year 1973 and offered  M.Com. course  under the management of Visvodaya Institutions, Kavali  and  later handed over to S.V. University in 1978.  In 1986 the department was shifted to its own campus, situated on the Peddapavani Raod with a total area of 78.9 acres.  The SVU PG centre handed over to VSU on 01.04.2011. The founder staff members of the department were Sri.N.I.Chand Basha, Prof.B.Dasaradhararami Reddy, Prof.M.Munirami Reddy and Prof.B.Balarami Reddy. The department of commerce has a glorious history of 48 years of its fruitful existence.

At present, the Department consists of One Professor and Three Academic Consultants. The faculty members of the department are well qualified with Ph.D., and very active in teaching, research, administration and extension activities.

The faculty of the department with diversified specializations was always trying for innovative academic research pursuits to provide qualitative teaching and research to the scholars and students. Commerce department is one of the biggest departments in the centre.

The department is actively involved in academic as well as research pursuits.  Conducting seminars, group discussions, quiz and class tests are regular features of the department.

The programme offered at present is M.Com course with 4 semesters under CBCS with student intake of 40. Two papers, one  on Cyber Security and another on Personality enhancement and leadership skills  are introduced in the course for the benefit of the students. The research programmes of M.Phil and Ph.D started actively since 1982.  As of now, 49 Ph.D. and 50 M.Phil degrees are awarded and the staff has published 245 research articles in National and International journals.  So far 7 minor research projects and 7 major research projects have been completed and 15 books published by our staff members. The staff has attended nearly 240 National and International conferences. The department has 24-hour Internet facility to all the staff members.

The thrust areas of research have been Rural Finance, Marketing and Finance, Banking development, Development of Industries.

The department has procured a good number of relevant and advanced books for the Library and the visitors from other departments appreciate the quality of the books.

Organizing National/Regional Seminars and conducting Class Room Seminars, group discussions and quiz programmes for Students is a common feature of the department.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

1. To create and promote Commerce and Management education.

2. To develop research in Commerce and Management education.

3. To interact with industry through project work.

4. To develop communications, interpersonal & leadership skills.

5. To provide computer training in accounting.

6. To arrange training programmes for unemployed youth.

4. Consumerism and Co-operatives.

5. Human Resource Development.

Moderate class rooms for first and second year students, staff rooms and rooms for office and Head of the dept. are available. One computer laboratory with AC. and 40 systems are available for Commerce Students to catering the needs. PG Centre Library is well equipped with a good number of Commerce and Management books (6,000) and journals (10). A separate competitive cell also established, to provide books for competitive exams besides providing all types of News papers (Telugu and English) and Journals. Separate Hostels for Girls and Boys are available with good infrastructure. Spacious play ground is available for the students to participate in the sports and games at University, Inter University, State and National levels.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN THE DEPARTMENT

EXTRA ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

  1. Industrial tours, industrial projects, campus selections and training programmes on entrepreneurship development conducted by the dept for empower the students.

  2. Guest lectures by eminent personalities like bankers/Industrialists.

  3. Eminent personalities and visiting professors from other Universities are frequently visiting the department for the benefit of the students and scholars.

  4. Student participation by forming commerce department association.

By forming small groups of students, personal attention is paid to the students by the teachers and their welfare in all aspects to the maximum extent.  The academic atmosphere as well as research environment is developed and to encourage the students.

The department is also planning to organize training programmes in Entrepreneurship Development for the benefit of the unemployed educated youth especially in Commerce.  The faculty also proposes to offer training programmes for the benefit of the beneficiaries of various government schemes for employment generation and empowerment.
