Significance of the Department The Statistics department plays a crucial role within the university, serving both academic and practical purposes. Academically, it provides essential quantitative skills to students across various disciplines, equipping them with the tools to analyze and interpret data effectively. This is increasingly important in an era where data-driven decision-making is ubiquitous in fields ranging from social sciences and economics to healthcare and engineering. By fostering a deep understanding of statistical principles, the department not only enhances students' ability to conduct rigorous research but also cultivates critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are invaluable in today's complex world. Beyond academia, the Statistics department contributes significantly to research and innovation. Faculty members engage in cutting-edge research that advances statistical theory and its application across diverse domains. Their work often intersects with interdisciplinary teams, driving collaborative research efforts that address real-world challenges. Moreover, the department serves as a consulting hub, offering expertise in experimental design, data analysis, and statistical modeling to researchers within and beyond the university. This outreach not only enhances the reputation of the university but also fosters partnerships with industry, government, and non-profit sectors, thereby enriching the broader community through evidence-based decision-making and policy formulation. Thus, the Statistics department serves as a pivotal academic pillar, bridging theory with practice and facilitating knowledge dissemination that impacts both scholarly pursuits and societal progress. The field of statistics is the science of learning from data. Statistical knowledge helps you use the proper methods to collect the data, employ the correct analyses, and effectively present the results. Statistics is a crucial process behind how we make discoveries in science, make decisions based on data, and make predictions. Statistics allows you to understand a subject much more deeply. In general, statistics can be defined as a branch of applied research which is concerned with the development and application methods for collecting, organizing, presenting, analyzing and interpreting quantitative data in such a way that the reliability of conclusions based on data may be evaluated in terms of probability statements. The statistical methods and procedures are use full for socio-economic development. Statistical methods are applied to enormous numerical facts with an objective that “behind every figure there’s a story”. Thus, it can be used in a diversified field of study; some of the functions of statistics can be as follows:
Statisticians offer critical guidance in producing trustworthy analyses and predictions. Along the way, statisticians can help investigators avoid a wide variety of analytical traps. Scope of Career Opportunities One can find a career in statistical profession by doing activities such as solving problems in a wide variety of fields and apply mathematical and statistical knowledge to social, economic problems. Careers that incorporate statistics can be found in a wide variety of disciplines. Here are a few examples of fields which use statistics, i.e agriculture, business, industry, computer science, health sciences, government, private, scientific and other disciplines. Thestudents can also apply for the Indian Statistical Services, Civil Services and Indian Economic Services exams. The job roles
