The department was established in 1982 under the jurisdiction of Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati until 2011. Later it was shifted to the Vikrama Simhapuri University jurisdiction in the year 2011 has a glorious history of 40 years of its fruitful existence. The faculty of the department with diversified specializations is always trying for innovative academic Research pursuits to provide qualitative teaching and research to the scholars and students. So far more than 30 PhDs produced under SV University and 5 PhDs produced under VS University. The teaching staff total of 4 out of 3 are regular faculty recruited in the year 2013 and one Academic Consultant serving the Department. Dr. V. Sailaja is presently acting as Head of the Department. The syllabus is upating for every two years based on BoS resolutions. The present curriculum was framed in the year 2020 and is implementing. Prof. P. Jacob Doss, Head, Department of Zoology, S.V. University, Tirupati is now actiing as Chairman, Board of Studies, Department of Zoology.

Andhra Pradesh is having 960 km of coastal line and Nellore district is having 193 km of coast. In the recent past AP is emerging as no.1 state in aquaculture produce. Based on this syllabus revised and we are training our students to support aquaculture industry for the local need. More than 30 students are in key positions in prawn hatcheries, feed mills, rearing units and fish units.
