The Department of Physics, VSU, Nellore owes its origin to S.V.University, Tirupati. The Department of Physics was started in September 1979 at SVU PG Centre, Kavali as a boon in connection with Silver Jubilee Celebrations. In April 2011, the Physics Department and this centre came under the jurisdiction of VS University, Nellore. In August 2023, the Department shifted to VSU Campus, Nellore. 

The objectives of the department are to impart good quality of education to the students of the region. To encourage the students and staff to do research in the applied fields. To impart good training to the students in the field of research and examinations like JEST/GATE/NET etc., To fulfill the needs of educational institutions in this region.

INFRASTRUCTURE:

The department has 3 class rooms, 1 Office room, 2 Staff rooms and 2 Research Labs with total area 3168  sq.ft

            The academic programme has been run with the help of 2 regular staff members -  Dr. A. Sivasankar Reddy (Assistant professor) and Dr. N.O.Gopal (Assistant professor & Head) besides 2 Guest faculty Dr.K.Bhagyasree and Dr.R.Subba Reddy.

Title of the Project: Preparation and characterization of magnetron sputtered ultrathin Ag 
based films for low- emissivity applications. 

Dr. N.O. Gopal : CSIR-Major Project

Title of the Project: Preparation and Characterization of Visible Light Active TiO2
Nanomaterials.

CURRICULAR ASPECTS:

Course Structure:

  • 4 Semesters with 16 theory, 7 labs and 1 project and with 96 credits.

Student Profile:

The Department has the total intake of 30 students per year.

TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESS:

  • Black board teaching along with teaching through LCD projectors.
  • Regular seminars conducted to improve student’s knowledge and communication skills.
  • Regular Students Counseling and Monitoring
  • Students are encouraged and trained to appear for GATE, CSIR-UGC-NET, SET and Other Competitive Examinations
  • Performance of students monitored through periodical tests, group discussions etc..

 

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:

Students are encouraged to

  • Participation in NSS activities
  • Participation in Blood Donations camps
  • Participation in Sports and Games and cultural activities.

 

FUTURE PLAN:

  • To raise the standards of teaching and strengthen the facilities to PG students.
  • To introduce new electives like  Condensed matter Physics, Applied Spectroscopy, Photonics,  Nano technology, to make them relevant to the present needs.
  • To give special training to students for competitive examinations.
  • Motivating and guiding the students for NET/SLET, GATE/JEST, email services etc.,
